There comes a point in my writing
where my characters start to do their own thing, for lack of better
phrasing. It’s the point where the
characters are so developed that you don’t have to tell then what to say
because their personality and their interactions with the other characters tell
you what they are going to say or do next.
But as great as it is as a writer it can be a difficult thing because it
means giving up some of your control as a writer. And lets face it what writer doesn’t like to
be in control of their work. But I have
found that where I do let go I have more fun with what I am writing and I like
the end product more often than not.
Many times when I first start writing I do not know my characters very well, at least, not as well as I had thought. They take on a life of their own and usually surprise me. I find myself saying "Wow, I had no idea they would do that!"
ReplyDeleteOther times, characters have quite literally walked onto the pages. I had no plan to write them in, no idea who they were or why they were intruding upon my story, but, atlas, they there were. The funny thing is these are the characters I wind up loving the most!
I have considered that possibility of my being completely nuts; letting the characters and voices inside my head plop themselves on a page and take over! But, I suppose also that is what makes writing so much fun; I can let all my crazy out!
